10th grade
The City of Ember
by Jeanne DuPrau
270 pages
Lina Mayfleet, at the age of 12, becomes a messenger for the City of Ember. Her classmate, Doon Harrow, becomes a worker of Pipeworks in hopes that he will fix the generator of electricity for the whole city. The lights of Ember that have kept the darkness from overcoming the people for generations are starting to flicker and at times, black out for minutes. The two ex-best friends join together to save their people and find a way out of Ember. This was a very easy read. It's similar to Lois Lowry's The Giver in the aspect of alternative societies. The plotline is original. However, the story was written in what seemed like an elaborated American Girl adventure.

Gillian Christian
9th
Devil in the Details: Scenes from an Obsessive hood by Jennifer Traig
246 pages
Main Character: Jenny Traig
This is a memoir about Jennifer Traig's teenage years, when her Obsessive Compulsive Disorder was at its worst. It is actually a very entertaining book, and you'll laugh along with Jenny as she struggles to cope with all her funny little quirks as well as a more "normal" type of angst, the kind that just comes with being a teenager.

10th grade
The Host
by Stephenie Meyer
619 pages

The Wanderer, a soul who has been on 8 different planets before joining earth, is put into the body of Melanie Stryder, a human who was caught in Chicago. Normally, the human's will disappears and the soul faces no resistance. That is not the case with Mel, who was a part of the human resistance against the invading souls. When Mel still had control of her body, the two most important people in her world were Jared, her love, and Jamie, her son. Wanderer, or Wanda, finds herself falling in love with Jared and Jamie through Mel's memories. This was a great book from Stephenie Meyer. The story seemed more real and realistic. I loved Wanda, the character, even with her self-sacrificing personality. She couldn't be with the person she wanted the most, because he hated her for taking Mel's will away. I found it a beautiful and heartbreaking book.

I really liked this book too...and I hear there might be some sequels coming! ~ Nicole
