This is Big!

(Who’s this guy? Keep reading and you’ll find out!)

October is always a busy month at the library. Our marquee event, Mystery Night, will occur on October 20 at the Fairfield Woods Branch Library. While the event is full, put your name on the waiting list - we always manage to get most everyone in for the show.

We are having another Wizard Rock show: Friday, October 19 at 7 PM. See our Good Music post this month for more on that.

Then, all of a sudden, we have been offered the chance to play host to SCOTT WESTERFELD! That’s right, the author of the Uglies books will be here at the library on Thursday, October 25 at 4 PM. Register beginning on October 4th.

So, make sure you stop by the library in October - who knows what else might happen!

It’s a Myth-tery

riordan.jpg

On a flight a few weeks ago (that’s right…I went to Disney World!) I finally picked up a book that everyone has been raving about: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. For those of you that don’t know, this Nutmeg 2008-nominee is the first in a series called Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

I really enjoyed this clever, funny book and I was happy that I recognized so many of the mythological elements. If you are waiting (im)patiently for the fourth, still-untitled book in the series to arrive, try these other myth-inspired tales:

*Nobody’s Princess by Esther Friesner

*The Game by Diana Wynne Jones

*Nightsong by Michael Cadnum

*The Moon Riders by Teresa Tomlinson

*Troy and Ithaka by Adele Geras

Wizard Rock is Back!

 draco.jpg  whomp3.gif  justin.jpg

Due to popular demand, we are throwing another Wizard Rock party at the library. This time, we will play host to three bands: The Whomping Willows, Draco and the Malfoys, and Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills!

Still don’t know what Wizard Rock is? Well, it’s just original rock music based on the magical works of some author named J.K. Rowling (not be confused with her detective novel…)

Come to the concert on Friday, October 19 at 7 PM. It is free and open to all.

Learn a little more than you might want to know about some of you favorite Harry Potter characters…a sample lyric from a Whomping Willows tune:

Hermione, this is killing me
You’re seriously a tease just for existing close to me
My curiosity keeps me in captivity
You’re gonna make this tree
a slave to pure insanity
Five years it’s been since we first met
Now you’re kicking it with house elves
And you’re every teacher’s pet
But to you a tree is just a tree
What would it take for you to wake up and get next to me

You’ll never think of the Harry Potter books in the same way again!

So You Think You Can Krump?

rize.jpg

Dancing with the Stars is one of the biggest shows on TV (as a girly gearhead, I have to pull for Helio Castroneves, personally) but when I feel like watching dancing, I prefer the summer show So You Think You Can Dance? There is something genuinely exciting about a group of unknown dancers challenging themselves each week to learn new styles of dance that they’ve never tried before.

One of the styles of dancing featured from time to time on SYTYCD is krumping, a sort-of hyperagressive, dramatic form of hip-hop dance. Check out Rize, a documentary about the evolution of this new dance form. It is so amazing, it will make you pop and lock!

Oh, and if you prefer Dancing with the Stars, you’ll probably enjoy Mad Hot Ballroom, also found in the Teen department…
