I DARE YOU

i_dare_you.jpg

All Fairfield teens entering grades 6 - 12 are invited to participate in the I DARE YOU Summer Reading game. The more you read, the more crazy things librarians will do.

  • Wear fake tattoos

  • Cut their hair short and/or dye it blue

  • Dress up in ridiculous costumes you choose

  • Go Goth on the first day of school

It’s easy! You don’t have to register to participate: Just let us know what you are reading in person, via this blog, or by email. You can read whatever you want - it all counts.

We pick a prize winner each week based on that week’s entries, and the more pages you read, the more raffle tickets you win towards the Grand Prize (And what will those prizes be? Attend a TAG meeting to help select them.)

We will also be having special events each Thursday from 2 to 4 PM. We dare you to:

  • Go Natural (Making Beauty Supplies)

  • Sing Out Loud (Video Karaoke)

  • Get Sticky (Duct Tape Workshop)

  • (Don’t) Eat This (Gross Food Eating Contest)

  • Yell it Out (Harry Potter Trivia Bingo)

  • Talk it Out (Harry Potter Book Discussion)

  • Break a Sweat (Big Screen DDR)

  • Win It All (Grand Finale Party)

Check the Teen page in the coming weeks for more details on dates and times. Remember, you have to read anyway, so you might as well READ TO WIN!

Waiting for Harry

keys.jpg

So, it’s about 80 days until the release of, as I am calling it, HP7. I have to speak in code, or else entire conversations about important library stuff get hijacked by discussions of will she or won’t she kill the Boy Who Lived. And that is just the grown ups! Forget about eager teens!

So, in the meantime, give this series a shot:

The Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix.

Arthur has asthma, but other than that, he lives an ordinary life as an adopted kid in a big family. After a bad attack that should have killed him he begins his adventures through various ‘Houses’ in the Kingdom, each ruled by a ‘trustee’ named for a different day of the week. Arthur must claim each houses’ key in order to rule that realm.

There are still two books to come in the series, which begins with Mister Monday. You might just anticipate them with the same…er…zeal as HP7.

Good Grace

A new old album in our Teen department for you to enjoy: Grace by Jeff Buckley. Never heard of him? He was a rising star in the New York music scene who tragically drowned before beginning the recording of his second album. His work has inspired many current bands, and although the album is over 10 years old, the songs still feel relevant and fresh. Learn more about him in the book Dream Brother by David Browne.

Magical Mystery

 prestige1.jpg

I know this is sort of cheating because we don’t have this film in the Teen collection, but since it is PG-13, I figure it’s alright. The Prestige, directed by Christopher Nolan of Batman Begins and Memento fame, didn’t make a big splash when it came out in theatres last spring. It’s too bad, because if you like mysteries, this is a tremendous film. It concerns two rival magicians, and their battle to master the most incredible magic trick in the world. It stars Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johanssen, who all give really intense performances. But my favorite part? David Bowie (a.k.a. ‘Creepy 80s Guy’ from our library DDR sessions) as real-life inventor Nikola Tesla. After seeing this movie, you’ll want to know more about Tesla, and his feud with electrical rival Thomas Edison. I can pretty much guarantee that you won’t figure it all out until the very end.

Q: What is Wizard Rock?

A: It is a musical movement that gets it’s inspiration from the world of Harry Potter.

Come to the library for a one-of-a-kind musical experience. See two awesome bands, The Whomping Willows and Draco and the Malfoys, as they visit Fairfield as part of their national tour. Sign up beginning April 2nd!
